SCHEDULE

Hour 1: Introduction to World Building: Examples of Fictional Worlds

  • Lecture:
  • Discussion:
    • Talk about the “core elements” of what makes these worlds unique and engaging.
    • 20 min
  • Core Elements Mind-map:
    • Review Bubbl.us
    • Brainstorm the core elements that can be part of their world (e.g., geography, races/culture, magic systems).
    • 30 min

Hour 2: Overview of the Tools

Hour 3: Establishing World Laws

Hour 4: Creating a World Map: Countries

  • Discussion:
  • Activity:
    • Define and draw countries on the world map using Inkarnate.
    • Use Fantasy Map Generator
    • Name the countries and decide on their characteristics (e.g., government type, cultural traits). Save that map file in your World Mind Map
    • 50 min

Hour 5: Creating a World Map: Biomes

  • Discussion:
    • How do biomes influence the world’s ecosystem and culture?
    • 10 min
  • World Mind Map:
    • Draw or use ChatGPT to create at least 4 different biomes (e.g., forests, deserts, mountains). Explain where these appear on the world map and the kind of conditions in each biome

Leftover time

Go back to previous sections that may have changed with new ideas.

At the end of the day, you should have:

  • Core Elements Mind Map
    • the core elements that can be part of their world (e.g., geography, races/culture, magic systems)
    • A list of laws for their world and how these affect the inhabitants and environment.
  • World Mind Map
    • A world map with labeled countries
    • Biomes that exist on the world map

Hour 1: Designing Flora (Plants)

  • Lecture: 
    • Introduction to world-building flora. Discuss unique plants from fictional worlds.
    • 10 min
  • Flora Mind Map: 
    • Draw or use Midjourney to generate images of plants.
    • Type or use ChatGPT to create descriptions of them
    • Create at least 3 unique plants per biome, considering their role in the biome and fauna
    • 50 min

Hour 2: Designing Fauna (Animals)

  • Lecture: 
    • Introduction to world-building fauna. Discuss unique animals from fictional worlds.
    • 10 min
  • Fauna Mind Map:
    • Draw or use Midjourney to generate images of animals.
    • Type or use ChatGPT to create descriptions of them
    • Create at least 5 unique animals per biome, considering their habitat and interaction with the biome and flora
    • 50 min

Hour 3: Designing the People

  • Lecture: 
    • Introduction to creating cultures and civilizations.
    • 10 min
  • People Mind Map: 
    • Draw or use Midjourney to generate images of people
    • Type or use ChatGPT to create descriptions of them
    • Create at least 3 unique races, with their culture, technology, and interactions.
    • 50 min

Hour 4: Establishing 3 Countries

  • World Mind Map: 
    • Assign main race(s) to each country
    • Country Map: 
      • Using Inkarnate, choose one country to make a more detailed map
    • 60 min

Hour 5: Capital

  • City Map:
    • Using Inkarnate, make a city map of the Capital of that country
    • 60 min

Leftover time

If you finish the County and Capital, you can make another country or city map until the day is done.

At the end of the day, you should have:

  • Flora Mind Map
  • Fauna Mind Map
  • People Mind Map
  • Updated World Map
    • Peoples/races assigned to countries
    • A County Map and A City Map

Hour 1: Inventing 3 Heroes

  • Lecture: Introduction to character creation.
    • 10 min
  • Character Mind Map
    • Midjourney ChatGPT to generate character images/descriptions.
    • Create detailed profiles for 3 heroes, including their backstories and motivations.
    • 50 min

Hour 2 and 3: Planning and Building Playspace

  • Discussion: 
    • Discuss the importance of a playspace in RPGs.
    • 10 min
  • Game Playspace: 
    • Plan the main playspace using RPG Playground.
    • Reference your world/country/city map
    • You can make anywhere:
      • A wild path in forest
      • A bustling city
      • An abandoned harbor
      • A castle being attacked
    • Make sure to incorporate
      • Biome
      • Flora, Fauna
      • People

Hour 3: Design In-Game Elements

  • Activity: 
    • Design an in-game hero using RPG Playground and Piskel.
    • Replace an existing character with a hero you designed
      • The animated body
      • And a face
    • This will have to be manually drawn, not something Midjourney or ChatGPT does very well.
    • 60 min

Hour 4: Design In-Game Animal/Monster

  • Activity: 
    • Design an in-game animal/monster. Create pixel art for the animal/monster and implement it in the game.
    • This will have to be manually drawn, not something Midjourney or ChatGPT does very well.

Hour 5: Design In-Game Element

  • Activity: 
    • Design an in-game element (e.g., a magical artifact, a unique building).
    • This will have to be manually drawn, not something Midjourney or ChatGPT does very well.

Building Playspace / Fill-ins

  • Activity: 
    • Continue building and refining the playspace to be interactive
    • Add to Mind Maps
    • Design more maps
  • Present your world
  • Look at and play other people’s worlds
  • Keep working at yours
